Methylated spirits, also known as denatured alcohol, is a type of ethanol that has been rendered unsuitable for human consumption by adding small amounts of poisonous and bitter substances such as methanol, pyridine or acetone. It is generally used as a solvent, fuel for alcohol burners, and as a cleaning and sterilizing agent.
Methylated spirits is commonly used in the cleaning of surfaces, removing ink and paint stains, as a glass cleaner, and as a fuel source for camping stoves and heaters. It is also used in the medical industry as a sterilizing agent for surgical instruments and surfaces.
Due to its flammable nature, methylated spirits should be used with caution and kept away from open flames. Ingestion of methylated spirits can be extremely harmful and even fatal, and it should never be consumed under any circumstances.
